TTT 16: Obsession
Hi friends,
இரவு வணக்கம் (iravu vaNakkam), Buenas Noches, and Good Evening from Nashville, Tennessee!
Thing I did
I took the entire week off of work from my job.
I didn’t open my work laptop. In fact, I didn’t even bring my work laptop.
As someone who has only worked in the USA, this concept was foreign to me.
Luckily, I’ve worked with some excellent European colleagues who have a strong sense of boundaries with respect to work.
They’ve taught me how to set these boundaries.
Eternally grateful to them for teaching me how to fucking live.
Tweet I loved
I am obsessed with maximizing compensation at my job.
From that, comes articles like Brag Doc or How To Ask For a Raise. These articles are the “Making Noise” part of “Add Value, Make Noise”. But what about the “Add Value” part?
To maximize the “Add Value” part, I had to understand “Engineering Leverage”.
“Engineering Leverage” is the lens that enables you to maximize your impact with respect to time.
I am obsessed with “Engineering Leverage”. I'll be writing about this in the next few weeks.
I used to be afraid that I would never figure out a corporate software job. I write these articles to help out Janahan from 5 years ago. And I hope they help you too.
Thought I had
Everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.
I applied to be a teacher for the Mimic Method Spanish and was not accepted.
Initially, I was pretty bummed about it. I had spent the last 6 weeks learning directly from the creator of the Mimic Method. I had gotten excellent feedback along the way on my progress.
I incorrectly assumed that hard work was related to the outcome of being accepted.
Angeli (my sister) reminded me that the correlation between working hard and success is spurious at best. There are many other factors you can’t control and can’t see. Her wisdom helped me see this was a blessing, not a curse.
I am still learning 2 languages, becoming a teacher for Tamil, writing 2 pieces a week, and exercising daily on top of working full-time and driving the house (cooking and cleaning).
I have more than enough on my plate.
I'd love to hear any feelings you felt while reading this and until next time - be easy.
Love,
Janahan
