Me and the subway tile unintentionally matching :)

Hi TTTTeam,
மாலை ą®µą®£ą®•ąÆą®•ą®®ąÆ (maalai vaNakkam), Buenas Noches, and Good Evening from New York City.

I’ll be sharing a thing I did, a tweet I loved, and a thought I had.

A Thing āœšŸ¾

I published 2 recipes

  1. High Protein Alfredo Sauce

  2. Amma’s Shrimp Curry

At my 2021 physical, my doctor told me I had to lower my cholesterol. Otherwise, he was going to refer me to a cardiologist for statins. He said if I could get my weight down 7-10%, my cholesterol issue would likely resolve.

I was 31 years old at the time. I didn’t want to be popping pills for the rest of my life.Ā

So I adapted (some of) my favorite foods to higher protein versions instead of cutting them out. I’ve gained and lost weight many times. I always gained the weight back once I re-incorporated the foods I’d cut out.

I chose a high protein strategy because I enjoy eating meat and to minimize muscle loss while losing weight. I combined this with a calorie deficit, weight lifting, and walking to complete the strategy.

At my 2022 physical, I reduced my

  • Triglycerides from 114 to 74 (40% down)

  • Non-HDL from 194 to 162 (16% down)

  • LDL from 171 to 147 (14% down)

And I lost 19 lbs and 4.5ā€ inches off my waist in the process.

These numbers are outcomes. They are side-effects of a process that I have to enjoy. Otherwise, I’ll slide back to where I was in 2021.

In the long term, I cannot sacrifice the texture or flavor of foods to improve its nutritional value. These 2 recipes are staples in my journey. I only share what I’d be proud to serve to others.

And that’s why process > outcome.

Reminder for 2023: Clarity comes from engagement—not thought. Talk to customers. Promote your offer. Double-down on what works. Ditch what doesn’t.

In corporate software engineering, the only way to get big raises is to get promoted too.Ā

I’ve shared tons of ideas in this newsletter over the last 6 months. If I’d never published them, I wouldn’t know what people want more of. The ones that get the most engagement tend to come back toĀ

  1. How To Get Promoted

  2. How to Ask For A Raise

I’m doubling down on what works.

I’ll be releasing my first small bet ā€œHow To Get Promoted Beyond Senior Engineerā€, on Sunday, January 15. I’m excited to share what has worked for me. And I bet it’ll work for you, too.

This year, you’re gonna get that promotion you’ve been gunning for.

A Thought šŸ’

This year, instead of setting resolutions, I’m setting intentions.Ā

The premise is simple - instead of focusing on outcomes, focus on feeling good during the process.

Our mental energy is precious. And what we focus on gets bigger. And the joy we feel internally radiates through our posture, our eyes, and even our voice.

So for me, I’ll focus on the physical sensation of what feeling loved feels like.

To strengthen my connection to the humans in this world.

I'd love to hear any feelings you felt while reading this and until next time - be easy.Ā

With Love,
Janahan

> I didn’t want to be popping pills for the rest of my life.

I couldn't agree more! I'd much rather change my diet and habits than pop pills forever - and then having to deal with side effects from medication.

You and me, both, brother!
