TTT 9: Internet Money
Hi friends,
இரவு வணக்கம் (iravu vaNakkam), Buenas Noches, and Good Evening from New York City - let's get into it!
Thing I did
This week in Spanish class I had two separate calls with native speakers - one from Peru and one from the Dominican Republic.
The goal of the calls was to identify what was preventing my Spanish from coming across smoothly. The tips my teacher gave to smooth out my Spanish were a surprise to me.
One was to focus my eyes on the other person’s eyes (mine kept going up in my head). The second was to not second guess conjugations, just calmly say the first one that comes to mind. The third tip was to slow down to 60%.
I was so skeptical of these tips.
But when I actually used the tips, I couldn’t even recognize the voice coming out of my own mouth. The pronunciation work from weeks 1-3 gave me big awareness of my lips, tongue, and breath. It sounded like I had become someone else, someone I liked to call "Janahanito".
Do you ever feel like someone else when you speak a different language?
Tweet I loved
What I loved about this tweet was how real it is.
One job I had, I filed a complaint about discrimination citing 4 instances against 4 different humans. A few weeks later, HR called me into an office. They told me they found no evidence to back my claim (evidence I had provided to them) and in an unrelated matter, I was being let go.
They didn’t even bother to separate these meetings to hide the retaliation.
Please stop spending time at work trying to change the culture.
Thought I had
I’ve spent the last 3 months of my life juggling up to 4 classes at a time on top of work.
I am so drained from all that learning. It’s time to turn that knowledge into action. My goal is take all that and pay it forward to the internet and to start making money directly from the internet, not additional money from my job.
I feel so grateful that you have joined me on this journey and am excited to share with you everything I will try and learn along the way.
I'd love to hear any feelings you felt while reading this and until next time - be easy.
Love,
Janahan
