Last October, I went to a Sunthar V comedy show in New York.
There, I met this super chill Tamil barber.
So I wanted to learn how to order my haircut in Tamil.
But, before I went to the barber shop and confused him - I wanted to run it by the Tamil tutor I don’t pay, Giri Mami.
So, after an hour of phone call and furious note taking, I wrote this out.
What you use, you retain.
So speaking what I do frequently in Tamil helps me retain it.
But writing it down before makes sure I don’t look stupid when I speak it.

Improving My Tamil Writing
When I’m writing something new in Tamil I
1. Start with writing it in English.
2. Translate the English into Tamil.
3. Send my translation to Giri Mami.
4. She calls me back to explain the linguistic gaps
English
I like how this part is. Keep it.
Learnings
பக்கம் instead of பங்கு. Latter assumes a whole is split into separate parts
(வெடு - Leave it) instead of (வெச்சு இருங்கோ - Keep it). The latter assumes temporary ownership.
English
On the top, I want enough hair to comb
1st Pass
2nd Pass
Learnings
உச்சியில் - in the peak
இழுக்க - to comb
கூடய - capable
அளவு - size
Don’t use சீப்பு as a verb
English
On the side, gradually fade it higher. Start with a 0. A low fade.
1st Pass
2nd Pass
Learnings
படி படியா - gradually
கூடி - increasing
குறைஞ்ச - decreasing
கூடி pairs with போக (going up)
குறைஞ்சு pairs with வர (coming down)
அடி - “by”. I only knew “to hit” before
காது அடி -> காதடி - by the ear
பூச்சியம் - zero
When talking about the side of your head, be specific on the start and stop points.
English
For the bottom here, keep this square shape. While you’re going up the sides, gradually fade it lower.
1st Pass
2nd Pass
Learnings
No need to say “square shape” - square is enough
Be specific about the starting and stopping points
Improving My Tamil Speaking
Everything I learned about improving speaking I learned from Idahosa Ness, the creator of the Mimic Method.
After I get the Tamil writing edited by Giri Mami, she sends me voicenotes on iMessage. I imported the voicenotes to Capcut. I used Capcut to delete the dead space, stitch the voicenotes together, and started listening at .5x speed.
It’s crucial to have the ability to dial the speed up and down. Otherwise, you’ll make mistakes listening and reproducing unfamiliar sounds.
I use the cursor to go back through those parts repeatedly until my lips, tongue, and breath could reproduce it.
For example, “எனக்கு இழக்க குடிய அளவு மயிர் வேணும்" was a tongue twister.
I replayed that over 10 times in a loop to reproduce it correctly. I did that for 25 minutes until it felt boring to do so.
For the next 25 minute practice session, I increased the speed from to .6x incrementally to 1.0x. I only increased the speed once it felt boring.
Then, it took 25 minutes to tape it, edit it, and post it.
With 30 minutes to write out my 1st pass, it took 3.5 hours of active work.
If you’re talking bang for buck, it was not as effective as immersing myself in Northern Sri Lanka. But I had fun and learned a bunch.
